New Body-Doubling Studio Sessions
You may be asking, what exactly is body-doubling? No, I’m not trying to clone you. But, wouldn’t that be nice sometimes, for productivity reasons?
“Body doubling is a productivity technique where an individual works alongside another person or persons to enhance focus and motivation. This practice can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with distraction or procrastination. The idea is that having someone else present, even if they are working on their own tasks, can create a sense of accountability and shared energy.” - chat GPT
We all know firsthand what it feels like to be hyper-focused on our work, just to be pulled away when inspiration strikes somewhere else, or the laundry needs to be done, or someone needs a snack. The more of you I chat with about the particular seasons you’re in, I hear our regular guest-expert calls are increasingly difficult to prioritize. For many of you, the time you have in your studio is already incredibly limited, so the time you set aside for your work needs to be protected. For many of you, you’re already committed to other calls, whether they’re for Harvest, another class you’re taking, or your day job.
But the same truth that brought you to Harvest remains:
you long for community.
I’ve been brainstorming other ways that Harvest can serve us all.
My first idea is this: Body-doubling open studio hours.
I’m going to open my studio, my computer screen, and my zoom room every other Tuesday starting August 13 from 10 am ET - 1 pm ET
My goals for these sessions are to have more “together time,” a low pressure environment, accountability, and simply an opportunity to be devoted to getting some time in the studio. My good ole friend Chat GBT gave me some concise info on how this can be beneficial to us all. I truly hope you’ll join me!
Body doubling can be a valuable technique for creatives for several reasons:
Enhanced Focus: Having another person present can help minimize distractions and increase concentration, making it easier to get into a productive flow.
Accountability: The presence of a body double can create a sense of accountability, encouraging creatives to stay on task and complete their projects.
Reduced Procrastination: Knowing that someone else is working alongside you can help reduce the tendency to procrastinate, as you might feel more motivated to make progress.
Supportive Environment: Body doubling creates a collaborative atmosphere where ideas can be shared and feedback can be given, fostering creativity and innovation.
Motivation Boost: The energy from another person's work ethic can serve as motivation, inspiring individuals to put forth more effort in their own projects.
Social Interaction: For those who may struggle with isolation, body doubling offers a social component that can reduce feelings of loneliness and enhance emotional well-being.
Structured Time: Setting specific times to work together can help establish a routine, making it easier to form consistent creative habits.
Different Perspectives: Working alongside another person can provide new insights or perspectives on creative problems, helping to overcome mental blocks.
Reduced Anxiety: For some, having someone else present can alleviate anxiety related to creative tasks, creating a more comfortable working environment.
Shared Resources: Creatives can exchange tools, techniques, or resources, enriching their work process and broadening their skillset.
Overall, body doubling can create a productive and supportive environment for creative individuals, allowing them to thrive and produce their best work.
